Cape May Getaway

Last night we headed down to picturesque Cape May for some dinner at the Red Store. It was a beautiful drive through down, and I love love love the location of this restaurant (as well as the beautiful church that's across the street). The food is local, the menu is always changing, the space is cozy and the service is great. All in all a great evening with friends.

Coconut Kefir

Coconut water kefir. It is a super important part of your diet if you are suffering from Candida, but even if you aren't - it is an amazing addition to your health regime. Instead of buying the very expensive coconut water kefirs you can find online, I decided to make it myself (thanks to Lorie Rice for the inspiration!). I bought 9 thai coconuts from the asian supermarket for $17, sterilized some mason jars, and busted out my cleaver. All in all, it was a pretty simple process.

Coconut Water Kefir

  • 1 quart Coconut Water
  • 3 tablespoons Water Kefir Grains or 1 packet of kefir starter (this is what I used)

Place the Water Kefir Grains in the coconut water.  Cover the jar loosely and allow the Kefir Grains to culture the coconut water for 24-48 hours.  Once the culturing process is complete, remove the Kefir Grains (or if you used kefir starter then this is not necessary). 

Here is an easy peezy way to open your thai coconuts (trust me, its really that easy...)

Why coconut water kefir?
 Coconut Water Kefir is a whole food probiotic, rich in vitamins, minerals and natural electrolytes.
This product is brisling with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, which creates awesome intestinal flora, digestion and production of B-6, B12, K, niacin and folic acid. This is a fermented beverage that hydrates, and gently cleanses the intestinal tract, and liver. Throughout time and place, living culture foods have been a sacred key to unlocking the secret of abundant health and longevity.

Cultured Coconut Pudding

  • Blender
  • Glass or ceramic container with lid
  • Meat from 3-4 young coconuts 
  • 1/2 kefir packet (I used yogourmet kefir starter)
  • Purified water
  • cinnamon or cardamom
  1. Open the young coconuts and conserve most of the the water for Coconut Water Kefir (recipe above). The meat should be white. If it is pink or gray, it should be discarded.
  2. Scoop the meat out with a strong spoon or spatula.
  3. Rinse any brown skin off the meat.
  4. Put the coconut meat in a blender and purée with just enough water to create a pudding-like consistency.
  5. Add half a packet of kefir starter culture or a teaspoon of kefir grains. Pulse to incorporate.
  6. Transfer the pudding to a glass or ceramic container, making sure there are a few inches of room on the top for the pudding to expand.
  7. Cover the container and let it ferment on your countertop or on top of your fridge at about 72-75 degrees for 7-10 hours.
  8. After fermentation, add cardamom or cinnamon and nutmeg and stir in.
  9. Refrigerate. It will last about 3 days.
In Sanskrit the coconut palm is referred to as “kalpa vriksha” meaning “the tree that supplies all that is needed to live”.

Tayrona, Colombia

Join me in Tayrona, Colombia this December (2nd-8th). The location is at a tucked away eco-resort along the coast of Colombia and the little details are divine. Plus, yoga twice a day with me!!! Hooray!

Hanging Ten

Bill Barlow interviewed me the other day for an article that he was writing about hanging ten:

Once upon a time, I was trying to learn how to drive a standard transmission.
I was after clear, concise instructions. How fast should the car be moving before changing from first to second? How many rpm? How quickly do I release the clutch in relationship to depressing the gas?
The answer was always the same: You just have to get a feel for it.
Then, it was frustratingly vague and almost entirely unhelpful. Now, I’m not sure I could explain it any other way. It’s almost like the car tells you when to shift, if you are paying any attention at all.
So it is with surfing. We can talk about wave dynamics and takeoffs and bottom turns, but really in the moment, it is all a matter of getting a feel of the wave. You don’t decide what to do, when (or even how) to put on a little more speed to get through the next section of the wave, when to turn toward the beach or stall a little to let the wave catch up. You just do it. I imagine thinking it through would end in a pretty hilarious wipeout.
The wave and the board come together, and if things are working right, they both tell you what to do next. Unless of course you’re on a longboard and they tell you to take a nice stroll up to the front of the board. It may work for a little while, then the nose sinks, the tail whips around, and after a moment, you come up from your faceplant sputtering.
Here’s one of those big differences between longboarders and shortboarders. A shortboard allows for the dramatic maneuvers, snapping up and down along the face of the wave, or even above it, pumping the board for speed. For most longboard riders, turns are fine if that’s what the wave needs, but not really an end to itself.
I’ve seen a few longboarders get airborne, if the waves are big enough, and that’s pretty impressive. But for most, the ride is all about the glide, and the best place to experience that glide is on the very tip of the front of the board, toes hanging over the edge.
For years, newspaper writers, and plenty of others, would use “Hang 10” in any story about surfing, without any particular interest in the context or meaning. It was more beat up than “gnarly” or “tubular.” But it describes riding with all your toes hanging off the nose of your surfboard, and if you’ve even seen anybody who’s good at it sidestep up there, believe me, it’s way harder than it looks.
By all accounts, it’s a wonderful feeling. Paul Breitinger, an excellent longboarder and all-around great guy, describes the end of his board on a moving wave as one of the best places in the world. Standing out there, with nothing but water ahead and around you, makes it feel like flying, he said.
So how do you get out there?
“The first thing anybody tells you is that you’ve got to set the tail. But I don’t even know what that means,” said Cailin Callahan. She’s a yoga instructor, musician and longboarder who seems to just dance out to the nose. I called to ask how to start walking the board, and I heard more or less that you’ve just got to feel it.
“I spent a lot of time as a kid watching my dad and Monk,” she said. Monk is Mike Monroe, who’s been hitting the waves around Ocean City on his longboard for decades, and her dad, who passed last year, was Paul Callahan, an all-around waterman.
“I kind of just did it,” she said, comparing it to learning to walk after crawling. You do it once without really thinking about it, then you try to do it deliberately.
Watching Callahan on the water, it doesn’t look like she’s walking out to the nose so much as sliding the board back into the wave behind her with her feet, occasionally cross-stepping back to make an adjustment or a slight turn.
So what’s going on?  
Have you ever noticed how much a noserider longboard looks like an airplane wing? The water flowing under the rounded concave nose of the board gives it lift. But it’s the rest of the board buried inside the wave that provides the stability to allow the surfer to walk out to the nose.
You can walk the board in almost any size surf, so long as there is a nice clean line to the wave and it’s going to last long enough for you to get out there. Callahan, who did a lot of traveling this year, described riding ankle-high surf in Sri Lanka with five toes on the nose this year.
A longboard, especially one with a nice, deep single fin in the back, is going to want to keep on a straight line. Like a goose finding its place in a formation, the board will feel the best when it finds the line of the wave, and will want to continue to travel along that line. Most shortboards have multiple smaller fins, in what’s described as a thruster setup. On a turn, half of those fins are out of the water, allowing for a much sharper change in direction. A single, deep fin is more like a keel, holding on to the wave.
Once your longboard is in the wave, any change in the balance of the board will tend to turn it. So to head up toward the nose, you want to sidestep along the center of the board to keep from changing the momentum.
Once you get up there, you just kind of float on the nose, Callahan said. These incredible noseriders who seem to be able to stroll out there no matter what the wave is doing – well, they make it look easy because it is easy, she assures me.
No doubt it’s different when you have a feel for it. My last attempt seemed to be going great, for several lovely seconds. After the board went flying, I was assured that nothing about that ride looked like I meant to do it. It was fun anyway.

Boo Thang

The other day when my iPhone was stolen, I found a *touch* of relief because I found this bracelet. It just made me laugh. "Boo Thang". Ha! Well, I was having a laugh about it with my friend Rob when we were out to lunch the other day, when he posed the question, "what exactly IS a boo thang?".

According to Urban Dictionary:

is a female that is not your girlfriend, but you share some type of relationship with her; you repect her and got luv for her.
"you talked to kyniska lately." "yea I talked to ma boo thang last night."

1:a boy or girl you like spending time wit an he or she always go yo back an you always got his or her back.

Boom. I love Thai food...and after spending a fair bit of time in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, I got a good handle on how to prepare it. While in the city, JamD and I hit up the spectacular-slightly-dirty-hole-in-the-wall-of-a-gem East Village Thai. We had some epic chicken larb (which is actually a Lao dish) as well as a vegetable massam curry. After spending my morning coffee time with Rob back in OC, I declared a recreation - so he headed over to be my taste tester later that evening. I made the larb with ground venison from a friend, and I made the massam curry with shrimp. I'll be posting the recipes later today!

Karma Rent

Ava of Yama Talent made the statement of the night, "My landlord doesn't take Karma." Let that marinate for a minute....

As much as I love yoga, healing, wellness and offering up insight...I have to keep reminding myself to not just 'give it away' for free. My skill, my passion, my "product", is valuable- and learning how to be compensated for that appropriately (and feel okay with that) is something that I am working on. It's not 'having too much ego' to want to grow your yoga business or to have high aspirations in your field- so long as its coming from your heart space. I don't want to reach more and more people so that I can be well-known. I want to reach more and more people because I have an infinite amount of love and devotion that I want to share...feel the NEED to share. It was a great night of networking and insight into growing yourself as a brand.

I had been talking about being the Light in yesterday's classes, and as the universe always delivers, this lesson was just reiterated to me throughout the night.

My goals?

-Set up a YouTube station with streaming tidbits of Cailin Callahan Yoga.

-Start offering private Skype sessions.

-Begin workshops around the country.


I had tweaked Gabby Bernsteins "May Cause Miracles" Day 16 to fit what we needed. I share....

"Perception is consistent with your choice, and...we choose between illusions and the truth, or pain and joy, or hell and heaven. Remember that by choosing the voice of the ego you're choosing to use your body as a weapon against love and to separate yourself from faith. If you choose to listen to your Inner Sense instead, you'll be led to see love and use your body as a vehicle to share this love. Energy comes in, it's transformed, and then you shed this love on all you encounter."

Today I make an important decision. Today I decide to let my Inner Sense be my guide. I welcome the guidance of my higher power to come forward and help me to transform my egos perceptions of my body, my actions, my surroundings. I welcome my Inner Sense to remind me of my body's true purpose, which is to be love and share love.

Raw Cultured Veggie Success!

Kelly and I slaved away over two weeks ago, slicing and dicing for our lacto-fermentation project. We "burped" the jars daily for a week before putting them in the fridge (to slow down the fermentation process) for a week. The verdict? They are freaking awesome! Ill be posting our favorite recipes this week! 

Why eat fermented foods?

When vegetables have been fermented, they become even more nutritious. The healthy enzymes which are present in the vegetables flourish when fermented, and create an environment that is full of probiotics, enzymes and minerals which are important for a healthy body. The probiotic good bacteria and enzymes in fermented foods help to populate our gut and intestines with Lactobacilli which are really important for healthy digestion. They also help to eliminate toxins from our body, so eating them will allow your intestines to detox which is a really good thing!
Raw, cultured vegetables are really potent in terms of helping your body to operate efficiently. When your body is working the way it should, then you will not only feel great, but you will look beautiful too. Eating fermented vegetables will also help with weight loss and lead to more energy, as well as balance out the pH levels of your body. When everything is working as it should, you will find your immunity is boosted from having a healthy gut and you will start to really feel cleaner.
The other hidden benefit of eating fermented foods is that they can help to control cravings that you might have for sweets. This is because they help us to feel full, so your appetite is reduced.

The Thomas' have six children. Derek is a hard-working, God-loving, amazing father and farmer. His wife Stefanie is a goddess, nothing-ruffles-her-feathers wifey and mama. They recently set up a self serve stand of their hand-grown-with-love Organic produce! The prices are unbelievably cheap, and the vegetables are super delicious. Today I bought two summer squash, two zucchini and a rosemary plant for $5!!!! $5 for local, organic, harvested-with-love vegetables. I'm so grateful to have something this great right around the corner from my home! They live on Main Street, right past the church (on rt9). If you'll miss it! It's the 4th house past the church on the left hand side, so drive slowly.

The stand is honor system, so bring your $1's. Unfortunately, the other day someone took all of the produce and all of the money from the Mason Jar! Hasn't anyone told them that karmas a bitch?

Support your local farms! Eat organic and support Mother Earth! Our bodies and the planet are far more important than saving a few bucks (and actually- in this case, you're spending less than you would on non-organic at the supermarket!).

Seriously though--- I now write the date that I opened it on the top of the container because I am going through at least* one a week. I just eat it with a one would eat ice cream. I figure since I can't have fruit, or booze, or sugar, or dairy...well damnit, I'm gonna have almond butter! It's soooo good, but it is surely going straight to my thighs. I don't even want to tell you guys that I usually follow up my almond butter session with a (few) scoop(s) of coconut butter....

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Because I spend most of my year out of the country and away from a TV, and then come home only to have no free time to hit the movies or catch up on sitcoms....I'm a bit behind. So forgive me if I'm rambling about something that ya'll are familiar with. Has everyone seen "BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD"? Because if you haven't, you must --- not now, right now. The story is about Hushpuppy and her Daddy (Wink) - and it is the most poetic summation of life.

 "In one of the critical encounters in Hushpuppy's valiant evolution into a victorious personality, she must confront in her mind's eye the beasts of the southern wild — the prehistoric aurochs. She calls them the "strong animals" and observes that weak hearts make them hungry. So when they come, she faces them with her strong heart and befriends them. This bold and tender action proves her fearlessness in the face of whatever shows up in her life." --No matter what comes our way, if we approach it with a strong heart we can persevere.

Sometimes you just have to rebel yell....

 Hushpuppy: Everybody loses the thing that made them. It's even how it's supposed to be in nature. 

Hushpuppy ends the movie with the following quote......

"When it all goes quiet behind my eyes, I see everything that made me lying around in invisible pieces. When I look too hard, it goes away. And when it all goes quiet, I see they are right here. I see that I'm a little piece in a big, big universe. And that makes things right."

This movie brought a lot of peace to the sadness that's been lingering lately. We live we, we die, we rejoin the cycle and circle of existence. In the end, we are a little piece in a big, big universe....and that makes things right.

Coconut Chicory Cappuccino

I have been craaaaaaaaaaaaaving cappuccinos lately, but that desire has been satiated with these delicious candida-friendly recreation....

  • 2 tablespoons roasted chicory root grounds
  • 3/4 cup hot water
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon xylitol
  • fresh ground cinnamon

Bring the water and the grinds to a boil. In another pot bring the coconut milk to a boil. Use a milk frother to froth up the coconut milk and then strain the chicory "espresso" into the milk. Sweeten with xylitol and top with lots of fresh cinnamon. SO GOOD. 

I Am Love.

Today's affirmation in Bernsteins' May Cause Miracles is "I Am Love". It reminded me of Louise Hays, "I Love Myself", which I often read to myself. I'm happy to share it with all of you!

I received this quote from a student and friend this evening. It resonates with me so much because I have felt this way for teachers of mine in the past. And even as I teach now, it is a sharing of the wisdom that I have accumulated from some outstanding beings over the years. I just wanted to take a second to express gratitude to my teachers, and to all of my teachers' teachers...I am grateful, so so grateful.

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!"
"Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear the load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!" There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: "Here she comes!"

Tony + Morgan

Tony and Morgan's wedding was really beautiful. I cried a bit, but kept it together for the most part. Though I was missing champagne (damn candida!), I was enjoyed the epic spread of goodies, danced it up and reconnected with an old friend. Home now and oh-so-ready for my bed! Congratulations to the lovers on their marriage...I love seeing true partners. So beautiful!
