Gayatri Mantra

Chanting is so very powerful, and the Gayatri is a mantra that I hold very close to my heart. From now on all of my classes will begin by chanting the Shanti Mantra, and my beach yoga classes will begin with the Gayatri Mantra. This is the most chanted mantra in all of India, with many variations concerning the interpretation- but all are in reverence of the light...

"Let us adore the supremacy of that divine sun, the god-head who illuminates all, who recreates all, from whom all proceed, to whom all must return, whom we invoke to direct our understandings aright in our progress toward his holy seat."

"We meditate on the effulgent glory of the divine Light; may he inspire our understanding."

"We meditate on the adorable glory of the radiant sun; may he inspire our intelligence."

The Gayatri is meant to bring light into any darkness...and this is what I meditate on when chanting it. It seems the appropriate mantra to chant for beach yoga because the sun literally rises and illuminates as we move through our practice.

Aum Bhur Bhuva Svah
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yo Naha Prachodayat

On the absolute reality and its planes,
On that finest spiritual light,
We meditate, as remover of obstacles
That it may inspire and enlighten us.
